Current Music: Tears (Full Arrangement) - The Chameleons
WHOA!!! it's been the better part of a year since i posted anything to this site... god ... but am i EVER ready for this rant.

WHAT THE FUCK is the catholic church thinking????!!!!?!?!?!?

There is division in the church... differing views on a lot of matters ranging from woman's role to homosexuality to celibacy to birth control... to ... i don't know... a LOT of shit.

PLUS, let's NOT forget about the lovely priest sexual abuse debacle that has DEFINITELY but a black mark on the church as a whole... at least in AMERICA...

so they decide to elect a former NAZI as the head of the church?!?!?!? way to go... well... i guess we can kiss uniting everyone goodbye. getting along with other religions... ESPECIALLY JEWS... yeah... forget about it now. we have a former HITLER YOUTH in the papacy now folks. that's right... LOOK IT UP! i mean... WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!

i'm sorry i don't give a shit if you've asked for forgiveness... even being associated in such a evil organization... there are certain things that shouldn't be alloted to you... being the head of a church is ONE OF THEM.

Just to play Devil's Advocate

(Permanent Link)
Yes, Ratzinger was a member of the Hitler Youth movement, but he was also a young German male in pre-WWII fascist Germany. Hindsight is 20/20, but at the time, anyone in that country with any future political ambitions didn't really have much choice. Obviously, far be it from me to defend the Catholic Church (I have my own issues w/ Catholicism), but the man has never even been implicated in any sort of war crime or human rights violation. Plus, that was 60 years ago, and in that period, times and beliefs have changed.

Again, I'm just playing Devil's Advocate here. If I were saying to someone else what you are saying here; and someone was saying to me what I'm telling you; I would probably point out the parallels between the Nazi party during the Holocost and the executions presided over by the Catholic Church's Inquisition during the Burning Times.

Regardless, I prefer to focus on the here and now; and in the here and now, this guy is a pretty scary choice. It just scares the crap outta me when Catholics complain that their new leader is too conservative. I think that what it really means for the rest of us is that 25% of the world's population will now be pushing even harder for a regression toward a more conservative era. This will probably be felt first in even more restrictive broadcasting standards for U.S. Television. It may also result in a stronger base for the Republican party in the next presidential election, but really, I can't see that base getting much stronger regardless of who is Pope.

However it goes, I kind of think this guy was chosen as a transitional figure. He's bloody old to start with, and one of the major factors John Paul II became Pope was because he was the youngest guy qualified for the job (the previous two or three Popes had had very short Papacies, and it was starting to look bad for the Church). They all know they can't ignore the large numbers of Catholics in Africa (and even more so in Latin America where there is a big struggle for worshipers between the Catholic and Lutheran church) for much longer. This guy will take the reins for 10 years, 15 at best, during which time he will agressively strive to align all the members of the Catholic church. After that, power will transfer to someone who can cultivate the massive Catholic movements in the developing world.

Ha! I think the Catholic Church needs to stop raping young boys before they tackle that one.

Actually, as far as Catholics go, that is one major impact of this new Pope. He pretty much guarantees that women won't be allowed to be priestesses during his rule. It's also pretty certain that he will continue the mandatory celibacy vow for priests, and given how conservative they are saying he is, it wouldn't surprise me if he started saying women need to be put in a special hut for their period because they are "unclean".

It's funny, if the President or a politician were to treat women that way, he would probably hanged. But for some reason misogyny is A-OK when you are the Catholic Church.

Last Fall my stepsister got her son baptized. It was weird because they actually took the clothes off the baby and dipped him in the water. Well, it was the parents choice. My stepsister and her husband did decide to have him unclothed and dipped in the water. As this was happening, I leaned over to my cousin and told him "now, I don't have a son but if I did I would not take off his clothes and hand him over to a Catholic priest." My aunt then gave me one of those evil mom looks. She isn't even Catholic.
That was the weirdest baptism. Catholic or not, it was the biggest freakshow. There was a substitute priest who was just winging it. Preschool songs were sung as well. I'll have to tell you about it sometime.

you make a good point... and since writing that maniacal rant i've read stuff to validate your point.

i'm not a catholic... i'm not really a christian either... but SUPPOSEDLY this guy is the emissary of god on earth.... he is the closest you can get to god on this planet and in this reality... whether you want to believe that... and whether most catholics believe that is another story altogether.

but another thing that pisses me off is the fact there is SOOOOOO much fucking news coverage of this. what about covering REAL news. i'm sorry, not to downplay or offend people that are devoutly catholic and like this kinda shit... but what about people that don't have a religious faith? why do i have to be subjected for hours and hours with all this pope shit... with them making it sound like the pope was an important historical figure...especially for me. bullshit! organized religion is a man made catastrophe.

You are certainly right about the over-abundant media coverage on this. It's sort of at the point where I'm wondering why they are covering Catholic Dogma like it's international politics. The news media should try to remember that 75% of the world isn't Catholic, and that there is a fine line between reporting and preaching.
